The story of little Chiyo begins in a poor Japanese fishing village, where she grew up with her mother and older sister. When she is sold to Gion, the geisha district in Kyoto, at the age of nine, she loses not only her parents but also her sister. Thanks to her charm and unusual gray-blue eyes, she becomes a promising candidate for the position of a geisha, rather than a common prostitute. For the lonely countryside girl, Kyoto in the pre-war era is full of dangers and dangers, but also beautiful tea houses, theaters, narrow streets, and temples.
During her training, Chiyo learns the art of being a geisha - dancing, singing, wearing kimonos, intricate makeup and hairstyle, and also seducing men. At the same time, she has to deal with the jealous older geisha, Hatsumomo, who hates her and leads a ruthless battle against her for the favor of clients. Chiyo has to face many obstacles and intrigues, but eventually becomes the famous geisha Sayuri.
Although geishas are not allowed to feel true love, Sayuri falls in love with one man and is willing to give up everything for him, even if it means betraying her duties and position.
